On Tuesday, 18 September at 2012 at 7 pm, Open Talent: "The challenges of urban development in the 21st century" will take place in the Events Hall in the UPC’s Technical School of Road, Canal and Port Engineering as part of Smart Mobility: Smart Transport Systems. The speaker will be the Catalan politician, former mayor of Barcelona and former Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade (2006-2008), Joan Clos.
Also participating in the event will be Manel Villalante, academic director of the UPC School’s new postgraduate programme in Smart Mobility: Smart Transport Systems. Villalante is an industrial engineer and former general manager of Land Transport at the Ministry of Development, as well as a member of the Board of Directors for companies such as Renfe, TMB, Gisa, IFERCAT and Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat.
Speaker: Joan Clos
Clos is a medical doctor with an extensive career in the field of public service and diplomacy and is currently executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). During his time linked with the public administration of Barcelona, first as a councilman and later as mayor, Clos led urban development projects like the Universal Forum of Cultures, held in Barcelona in summer 2004, and the resulting redevelopment of the Besòs-Diagonal Mar area. He is also responsible for promoting the 22@ Barcelona project, the technology and innovation district near Poblenou. On the international scale, he has occupied posts such as president of Metropolis, the international network of cities and president of the World Association of Cities and Local Authorities. He has also served as chair of the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA) and member of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions CMRE). He has received various awards recognising him for his work, such as a gold medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1999 for the transformation of Barcelona and UN-Habitat’s Award of Honour in 2002 for promoting global cooperation between local authorities and the United Nations.
