A Geographic Information System is an integrated set of pieces forming a whole: hardware, tools and geographic data. The tools are designed to capture, store, analyze and display geographically referenced information. Today, this information is key because it is a strategic asset that provides knowledge and added value to organizations today. The emergence of new information and communications technology has led to the development of new applications and new ways of understanding and managing our environment.

To make the operation does not use a single graphical tool but despite working primarily with ArcGIS, the goal is to convey concepts clearly and allow the student to use the various tools on the market either (QGIS, gvSIG Geomedia ....).

Using CartoDB, MapBox, and MapZen Mapillary, students publish and display data from various sources, for example, those from social networks. To do this you need to know to access data sources, visualization techniques and the different possibilities of new platforms for publishing maps. Techniques and services that will be learned during the course, will be generated quickly and easily customized maps via the web.

Many businesses have less than 100m? Where is the nearest gas station? What is the fastest way to get there? All these questions will be answered by the students of this module, as they will be able to create and deploy a web application functionality geolocation learning to work with OSM Overpass and routing.

The postgraduate GIS Technologies wants to teach students to make it all the way for the creation of a GIS from the beginning, that is, starting from the origin and creation of graphical data, through the exploitation and analysis these data with suitable tools and reaching creating WEB GIS applications. At the end of the course the student will be able to publish and visualize data from many different sources such as from social networks.


  • Distinguish between different sources of information and graphic formats (vector, raster, AutoCAD, shape, ....).
  • Using various tools on the market for both work mapping (MicroStation) and exploit information (ArcGIS, QGIS) and view the web (learning to make websites with HTML, CSS and Javascript).
  • Ability to capture or from the load data to generate a result (thematic maps, prints, reports).
  • Provide basic knowledge of programming.
  • Create small websites where present GIS solution designed.
  • Make applications for the web display of data.
  • Configure server coverage.

The program is realized in the form of distance learning. Students held several workshops and practical classes will be compulsory and graded. For the implementation of practices outside the classroom, students have support manuals and assistance from teachers.

Origin and Data Sources; Cartography
3 ECTS. 18 teaching hours.

Introduction to Databases and GIS Programming Environments
6 ECTS. 40 teaching hours.
  • General concepts of programming and databases.
  • Hello World !, your first website: HTML and CSS.
  • Variables and constraints: basic JavaScript operations.
  • Loops and Arrays: how to turn elements.
  • How to insert an object Google Maps.
  • HTML semantics: meaning each item. Fences by address or location. Hello jQuery.
  • CSS Advanced: generalization of items. Markers maps.
  • How to integrate with external elements?

  • Introduction to server coverage and OGC.
