This postgraduate course can be attended as part of the master's degree Geographical Information Systems.

The GIS (Geographical Information Systems) is an organized integration of hardware, software and geographic data designed to capture, store, analyze and display geographically referenced information. In the society we live in, this information is important because it is a strategic asset that provides knowledge and added value to organizations today. These technologies include exceptional abilities to work the land, offer new ways of understanding and managing our environment.

The course combines the approach to the bases of study, case studies and workshops on implementation of GIS methods and computer techniques, aimed at improving the management and organization of territorial information, the environment and natural areas.

Its aim is the continuous training and reorientation of professionals related to the environment, and land management and other disciplines related to geography, urban planning, among others, require that incorporate new technologies (Geographic Information TIG).

Students work from concepts and tools common to new vectors of territorial and environmental analysis methodologies using GIS spatial analysis applied themselves to the development of intelligent maps, managing natural resources and the evaluation of environmental impact. Using various platforms such Arcgis and Geoomedia.

As a distinguishing feature from other courses the high performance of practical learning that provides a good level of work autonomy and good technical training to meet skills level in GIS geospatial data integration in the development proposals, studies and documents based territorial planning and management of urban natural areas and the environment.

The teaching staff has extensive experience in implementing GIS projects in industry and government projects as proved developed at the Laboratory of Virtual Modelling of the city's GIS area.

The student acquires computer skills and skills applying basic concepts, guidelines and components to create effective GIS project in this line.

  • To acquire technical capacity to carry out a structured process of analysis of territorial and environmental information in a GIS.
  • Design, implement computing systems to develop environmental parameters.

  • Ability to carry out environmental impact studies, vulnerability maps and other environmental analysis with a tool.
  • Ability to develop an analysis of environmental monitoring indicators entor built using GIS tools.
  • Skill in the use of GIS for specific programs prepare specific proposals for development of natural areas.

The program is realized in the form of distance learning. Students held several workshops and practical classes will be compulsory and graded. For the implementation of practices outside the classroom, students have support manuals and assistance from teachers.

Methods of Analysis with GIS Strategic Planning
6 ECTS. 40 teaching hours.
  • Defining the strategic vectors of spatial analysis.
  • Workshop on Implementation for the implementation of sectors in Arcgis.
  • Definition of tools and technology Geoomedia.
  • Workshop application: Connections, Views, spatial analysis, influence, topology.
GIS Planning Tools
3 ECTS. 20 teaching hours.
  • Concepts and Tools for Planning and Territorial Management.
  • Case studies: Analysis and proposal versus planning and monitoring.

Datos SIG y Propuestas Medioambientales
2 ECTS. 15 teaching hours.
  • Basic concepts about environmental areas and vectors and the associated cartography.
  • Adequate understanding of the technical development of the Departamento de Medio Ambiente de Catalunya (The Catalonian Department of the Environment) in terms of natural space management.
  • Broad understanding of experiences and case studies of environmental GIS implementation.
  • Creation, organisation and management of information about natural spaces using GIS tools.
Estudios de Impacto y Gestión de Espacios Naturales con SIG
5 ECTS. 35 teaching hours.
  • Adequate understanding of natural and environmental resource analysis and management of information resources.
  • Perform collection, integration and processing of environmental information using IT resources available on an open network.
  • Make environmental impact studies, vulnerability maps and other environmental analyses using GIS tools.
  • Technical ability to create, organise and generate new environmental information using GIS tools.
  • Research into local plans of action and Agenda 21 plans for tracking urban transformation.

To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official or recognized university degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree or diploma. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.
