This lifelong learning course can be attended as part of the master's degree Geographical Information Systems or as part of the postgraduate course GIS Technologies.

In this first contact with the world of GIS, the starting point for working with Geographic Information System is to know what it is and where it comes from graphic information. For this purpose there is a cartographic base for students dealing with topics such as the different file formats, CAD type mapping, etc. From there, the next step is to analyze and exploit the information graphically. Do not use a single tool but, despite working primarily with ArcGIS, the goal is to convey clearly the concepts of GIS and allow the student to use the various tools on the market either. The last step is to keep all this information and in this sense, the goal is to teach the initialization and load data graphs in the system by installing and configuring a database.

Content

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The program is realized in the form of distance learning. Students held several workshops and practical classes will be compulsory and graded. For the implementation of practices outside the classroom, students have support manuals and assistance from teachers.

Origin and Data Sources; Cartography
3 ECTS. 18 teaching hours.
  • Introduction to Geographic Information Systems.
  • Introduction to cartography, coordinate systems, reference systems and exixting data formats. Basics 2D. Data input accuracy.
  • Review and adaptation mapping from the CAD.
Análisis de Datos Geoespaciales en un Sistema de Información: Herramientas
5 ECTS. 44 teaching hours.
  • ArcGIS model. Cartographic display.
  • Interpretation of data using symbols.
  • Presentation of results: layouts, graphs and reports.
  • Analysis with ArcMap.
  • Structuring information - geodatabases.
  • QGIS: visualization, analysis and exploitation of data graphs.
  • Geomedia: visualization, analysis and exploitation of graphical data.
Introduction to Databases and GIS Programming Environments
6 ECTS. 40 teaching hours.
  • General concepts of programming and databases.
  • Hello World !, your first website: HTML and CSS.
  • Variables and constraints: basic JavaScript operations.
  • Loops and Arrays: how to turn elements.
  • How to insert an object Google Maps.
  • HTML semantics: meaning each item. Fences by address or location. Hello jQuery.
  • CSS Advanced: generalization of items. Markers maps.
  • How to integrate with external elements?

Lifelong learning diploma issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official or recognized university degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree or diploma. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.
