Shortly we will publish updated information about the new edition of this programme.

It is impossible to think, design and build cities today without a complex approach integrating social knowledge and a practical experience of urban design. It requires a deep understanding of the multiple processes concurring in diverse urban environments: historic cities experiencing the influx of migrants from other countries, decline of industries that gave an impulse for many cities' development, reevaluation of environments and new understandings of ecology, the needs for security and the rights to the city that urbanites today may claim.

BCNOW!- Advanced Transdisciplinary Urban Design & Research integrates these questions with a transdisciplinar and practical vision of urban research, design and management (http://bcnow.org/). It is an innovative program with a ground breaking pedagogy that incorporates faculty expert in urban design and social sciences. It is aimed at professionals willing to go to the next level of expertise, make the most of their abilities, and enlarge their knowledge and experience base. Architects or engineers, urban planners, sociologists or geographers, ecologists, activists or economists: all form an international and transcultural group of highly trained and motivated professionals.

After being implemented very successfully in Saint Petersburg since 2014, in a
joint collaboration with the urban design institute SREDA, BCNow! is now developed in Barcelona, a city long regarded worldwide as a leader in urban transformation. The acknowledged quality of its urban design, its commitment to sustainable and technological innovations and its implementation of public policies are currently taken to a whole new level of social awareness and is fast becoming a test bed for new systems of governance and participation. BCNow! participates of this momentum and will work on real case studies with the capacity of being transposed to other international urban realities.

The transdisciplinary and the international focus of the Program is further supported by its equally transdisciplinary and international faculty. Students will be directly guided and evaluated by the active faculty from UPC-BarcelonaTECH, UAB-Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, UvA-University of Amsterdam and EUSP-European University at Saint Petersburg.

The Master is promoted by the Barcelona Metropolitan School of Architecture. The School has the latest technology in equipment and facilities.

Aims

The main objective of the program is to provide students with the necessary tools to contribute to the improvement of the quality of reflection, analysis, planning and urban design, integrating social and technical aspects in their solutions.

It will enable students to:

- Transdisciplinary teamwork, overcoming the conventional limitation separating functions according to disciplines, advocating instead the alternative notion of design collaborative. Understand the project not as an instrument unique to architecture or engineering, but as the main vector of confluence of different professions involved in defining the city;

- Consider the transformation of the city and the urban environment as a positive force that involves a deep knowledge of preexistences and current and future needs. The dialectical relationship between the new and the existing as well as the process by which innovation can be achieved;

- Understand the impact and results of each action plan and specific design, focusing specifically on new lifestyles. The public space as aggregator of social identity and community. The role of social groups in shaping the contemporary city;

- Introduce creative and critical thinking about the identity of a particular place and the multiple possibilities of its beneficial transformation;

- Be able to perceive the importance of the territory and the landscape in the city. Work around the notion and practice of upcycling, urban agriculture and green corridors

Who is it for

BCNOW! is aimed at graduate professionals from different disciplines working in public or private entities wishing to become critical agents in the transformation of the city and the territory.

The Master is designed to integrate architects, engineers, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists and economists with the desire to promote information-sharing and teamwork among specialists from different disciplines and overcome the conventional dichotomy designer / consultant.

BCNOW!- Advanced Transdisciplinary Urban Design & Research wants to become a permanent laboratory of young professionals from different fields and from around the world, forming a cross-cultural group of highly trained and motivated urban experts.
