Base Isolation is an advanced seismic protection technique for buildings, bridges and other constructions, which consists of incorporating a series of flexible elements in a horizontal direction between the foundations and the construction that isolate it from movements of the ground.
This technology has undergone a major worldwide expansion in recent years. In fact, it has been declared mandatory for essential buildings in several recent design codes. This presentation describes the general context of Base Isolation, and provides the knowledge necessary to study it in more depth.
The speaker
Francesc López Almansa holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering and is lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). He has extensive experience in advanced structural consultancy and technology transfer in the construction field. He is an expert in seismic engineering in general and in base isolation in particular, at both educational and research level and professional. He has supervised 15 doctoral theses, most of which were related to seismic engineering. He is the author of more than 200 research papers, which have been published in scientific journals and presented at Spanish and international scientific congresses.
