The UN Sustainable Development Goals set out a vision for 2030. It is a means to ensure prosperity for all, end poverty and protect the planet. Light is fundamental to humanity – from securing safety and resilience, enabling equality, to facilitating social interaction and achieving prosperity. To design with the long-term health and wellbeing of people, place and planet in mind … harmonizing the symbiotic relationship between humans and biodiversity, we need to shift the lighting design paradigm towards a regenerative approach.

Florence’s lecture will offer her vision and a pathway on how a holistic and innovative lighting design approach may contribute to achieving a sustainable and regenerative future.

This Open Talent will be held in English.

The speaker

Florence Lam
. MSc in Architecture (Light and Lighting) from UCL The Bartlett School of Architecture. MA(Cantab.) in Engineering from University of Cambridge.

Arup Fellow and Global Lighting Design Director. She is a multi-award-winning lighting designer with over 15 international and national awards to her name, including Lighting Designer of the Year in 2013 and recipient of the Society of Light and Lighting 2020 President’s Medal. Her passion and expertise in holistic 24hr humanity-centred lighting approach play a key role in many of her projects, from museums to airports, bridges to city precincts all over the world. She also has a strong interest in visual light art as a lighting designer and has collaborated with a number of artists and architects on public realm projects including Anish Kapoor’s ArcelorMittal Orbit in London, the World’s Largest Timepiece along Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich and Dongdaemun World Design Park in Seoul.

Her projects of significance include the V&A Dundee, London’s Millennium Bridge and British Museum World Conservation Centre, The Acropolis in Athens, Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal, Taipei Taoyuan International Airport T3, Hong Kong’s Stonecutters Bridge, Kai Tak Sports Park Development masterplan and Tai Kwun Centre of Heritage and Arts.

Currently, appointed Visiting Professor of Lighting Design and Engineering at The Bartlett UCL Institute of Environmental Design and Engineering; supervisory board member for the LIGHTCAP project (European Training Network under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions framework) and advisory board member for the ENLIGHTENme project (EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme).
