Why this master's degree?
The breakthroughs in AI, the exponential increase in robotic technology, and their ease of access for non-expert users means that these types of algorithms are today ubiquitous.

Architects are, or in the near future will be, required to work with, or to be computational experts in, new transdisciplinary design methodologies. A lack of these skills in the new generations of designers may lead to an unwanted situation in which the design methodologies in architecture are directed and designed by non-experts in architecture.

The master's degree in Artificial Intelligence for Architectural Design aims to contribute to breaching this gap between architecture and technology based on AI, and provides general basic training adapted to professional architects which will train future leaders in transdisciplinary design.

With a clearly interdisciplinary approach, the programme aims to enhance the relationship between Architecture and Computing within the methodological design process by studying Artificial Intelligence and its algorithms. Deep Learning (DL), Machine Learning (ML), Multi-Agent System Design (MASD), Person Centered Environmental Intelligence (AAL), Evolutionary Computing (EC), Shape Grammar (SG) and Linear and Logistic Regression (LR) are becoming part of architectural design from the nano scale to the territorial scale, in the data analysis process of Data Mining, in the theoretical discourse, and in the language consolidation process.

The master's degree has an innovative training structure based on three intersecting methodological lines: the Critical Theory line, the Instrumental Theory line and the Design as Research line. This approach enables the student to understand the vast array of new hybrid methodologies that technology offers for design.

Aims
The learning process will be clearly divided into two main objectives:

  • Obtaining general knowledge about the discipline of Artificial Intelligence as a whole, and being able to understand its main objectives, contents and the research of current interest in society.
  • Developing mathematical and computational skills to be able to apply them throughout the practice in the algorithmic processes that will be studied.
Who is it for?
University graduates (with or without work experience) with university studies preferably in Architecture, Engineering or Design and Creation wishing to expand their knowledge about the new focus in architectural discourse, receiving training in Artificial Intelligence and advanced algorithms so that they can become computational experts in new technologies.

Architects wishing to acquire an overall perspective on this type of technology which are influencing or will influence humanity.

Professionals interested in improving their technological skills in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence processes in new design methodologies in working environments.

Investigating Research
Define the specific dimensions involved in design, based on the latest studies on this subject from different scientific and artistic perspectives. This is a very special task, because it has to anticipate not only the construction of the physical form of the designed object, but also the object's impact, its meaning and its social use.

For this reason, the relationships between art and science, and between personal knowledge and experience, on the one hand, and social culture and history on the other, play a crucial role in this case, because design in fact acts as a bridge between the two perspectives.
7 ECTS 56h
Online
Design by Research Studio 1
A complete practical experience of an architectural or urban design process will be carried out using AI methods previously agreed upon with the teacher using the proposed architectural subjects and programme, together with the proposed algorithm for use in the process.
1 ECTS 8h
Online
Critical Theory 1
This first critical theory seminar determines the limits and current conditions of the ability to prefigure with a design. In particular, it will determine the dialogue between the use of mathematics and geometries in a digital manner, and artistic experiences from "abstract" art, while always remaining within the design process.
2 ECTS 16h
Online
Learning by Doing
Students will be trained in the basic techniques and main concepts of object-oriented programming. As non-experts, they will also receive training in visual programming techniques with Grasshopper-type software.
3 ECTS 24h
Online
Seminar 1
Students will be trained in the basic techniques and main concepts of object-oriented programming. The languages will be appropriate to the subject matter of the course chosen by the teacher. They will basically be oriented towards interaction with Java, Open cv, etc.
2 ECTS 16h
Online
Artificial Intelligence Theory 2
  • Automatic decision-making processes.
  • Neural Networks.
  • Planning.
6 ECTS 48h
Online
Seminar 2
Students will be trained in the fundamental techniques and main concepts of object-oriented programming for automatic decision-making and evolutionary computing. The languages will be appropriate to the subject matter of the course chosen by the teacher.
1 ECTS 8h
Online
Critical Theory 2
This second seminar focuses on the configuration of objects or designs that have already been built or configured, either manually or computationally, and analyses their components and their systematisation in a design workshop. A scale of levels or categories of social interaction must be defined, within which each design can be measured according to its impact on the world outside itself.
7 ECTS 56h

Design by Research Studio 2
A complete practical experience of an architectural or urban design process will be carried out using AI methods previously agreed upon with the teacher using the proposed architectural subjects and programme, together with the proposed algorithm for use in the process.
6 ECTS 48h
Face-to-face
Seminar 3
Students will be trained in the fundamental techniques and main concepts of programming self-organising multi-agent systems. The languages will be appropriate to the subject matter of the course chosen by the teacher.
2 ECTS 16h
Face-to-face
Artificial Intelligence Theory 3
  • Agent systems.
  • Emerging systems.
1 ECTS 8h
Face-to-face
Critical Theories 3
This seminar focuses on the re-figuration that any design causes. Ethnomethodological studies are essential in this area. Working with three-dimensional models, both digitised and otherwise, is especially useful in this seminar in order to verify the nature of the re-figuration in each case, in terms of the group or design workshop and in terms of the interior and personal life of each designer.
7 ECTS 56h
Face-to-face
Design by Research Studio 3
A complete practical experience of an architectural or urban design process will be carried out using AI methods previously agreed upon with the teacher using the proposed architectural subjects and programme, together with the proposed algorithm for use in the process.
7 ECTS 56h

TFM Design Implementation Studio
The subject TFM: Design Implementation Studio is the basis for the content and production of the Master's Degree Final Project. It will be based on carrying out an architectural or urban project following one of the computational methods based on AI studied during the course, which must be agreed upon with the teaching team.

It has a theoretical and a practical component. In the theoretical part, the student must produce a state-of-the-art report on the design problems which have been applied in the past, and then produce a practical part in which the design methodology to be implemented is studied, and the project carried out.

The work done in the Design Implementation Studio must be presented before a jury of guest experts, depending on the algorithmic subject matter worked on during the programme.
Degree
Special master's degree issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities.
