Why this programme?
The master's degree program in Architecture Monument Restoration has over 25 years of experience and has has continously been adapted to the market circumstances of restoration of historical monuments and heritage management . This specialised education is now even more necessary and urgent than 25 years ago. It is an interdisciplinary process , which combines technical knowledge with humanistic knowledge and pointing to a professional able to gather in their speeches aesthetic and functional qualities that allow the building of heritage projects towards a new life community. The amount of graduates now exceeds 250 professionals who continue working and developing roles of responsibility in Spain and other countries.

Attendance at conferences, publications of some teachers and directors, participation in symposiums, contacts with the administration competent in this field visits and contacts with related professionals and craftsmen allow us to grasp the needs of and react to market changes , incorporating specialists able to provide this new knowledge .

  • Provide technicians with criteria and professional skills to be able to assess the importance of monuments and monumental ensembles, in order to carry out the interior renovation of historical centres.
  • Recognise the identity of pathologies to be able to intervene respectfully in the restoration of monuments, using the most suitable techniques.

  • Previous Knowledge or studies on Historic, artistic or arquitectonic Heritage, from the point of view of History, History of art and architecture, Civil Engeneering or Restoration will be deeply appreciated.

History and Theory of Restoration, from the Origins to the Charter of Venice

Construction Knowledge: Materials and Techniques
  • Technique in architectural memory. Evolution of elements and traditional building procedures.
  • Vertical structures: Dry stone walls, mud walls, adobe, masonry, brick, mixed. Porches, arches and vaults: types, plans and construction. The gothic vault and its design. The Catalan vault. Foundations.
  • Horizontal structures: Railings, roofs and flat roofs. Staircases.

Urban Morphology and Intervention in Historical Centres

  • General Concepts and main causes: physical, mechanical, biological, chemical, human.
  • Damage in walls, vaults and stone arches. Fissures, detachments and cracks. Analysis of stability and mechanical behaviour of arches and vaults by graphic statics. Advanced methods of modelling and structural analysis.
  • Structural consolidation: recomposition, improvement, injections, buttresses, tensor bars, metal seams, metal clips, rings and crowns. Scaffolding, arch forms, propping and shoring.
  • Damp in old buildings : capillarity, filtration and condensation. Treatments by ventilation, draining, hygroconvection, electromagnetism, capillary interception and air chambers.

Workshop on Intervention Projects
  • Design of a total or partial restoration project for a building described and analysed in the previous analysis workshop. The project will consist of general and detailed plans and a historical, architectonic, functional and technical report (pathologies, diagnosis, intervention proposals and incorporation of new elements).
The UPC School reserves the right to modify the contents of the programme, which may vary in order to better accommodate the course objectives.
Special master's degree issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain it, is necessary to have an official university qualification. Otherwise, the student will receive a certificate of completion of the programme issued by the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Solving exercises
Solutions are worked on by practising routines, applying formulas and algorithms, and procedures are followed for transforming the available information and interpreting the results.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Assessment criteria
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Solving exercises, questionnaires or exams
Individual tests aimed at assessing the degree of learning and the acquisition of competences.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.

The students on this master's degree will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

    Doctor in Geography and Graduate in History of Art from the University of Barcelona (UB). Associate lecturer at the Department of Theory and History of Architecture (THATC) of the UPC. His research has focused on urban history of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, history of Civil Engineering and Cultural Heritage Management. He works at the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) as a cultural manager and, since 2015, is linked to the project of the European Prize for Urban Public Space at the CCCB.

Academic Director of the Postgraduate Course in Pathology and Structural Study at COAATEEB. He has been responsible for the area of Permanent Training of the ITeC. He has published: "Secretos de un Sistema Constructivo: el Eixample" (1ª Edición 2001, 2ª edición 2008) y "La casa de cós al Maresme" (2017). The field of research has focused on architecture and the construction of the 19th and 20th centuries.

    BEng. MSc. PE. PhD. Professor of Construction Engineering at the UPC. Teaching, research and technology-transfer activity focused in structural analysis and retrofit of masonry and historical constructions, including advanced numerical modelling and extensive testing. A number of innovative retrofit solutions have been developed; practical applications have been promoted and supervised, some of them in World heritage constructions. 20 Doctoral Theses supervised, some in earthquake engineering. More than 250 research papers published in scientific journals and presented at scientific conferences. Has participated in research projects (national and international) financed by public and private funds, having been promoter and coordinator in many of them. Member of the ISCARSAH committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage of the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) since 2001.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

In addition to your CV, the UPC School will also require you to submit the following documents for preregistration on this Master's degree:
    Motivation letter explaining your experience and afinity with Historic-artistic Heritage and Historical building and old towns restoration.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
