Why this programme?
A Geographic Information System is a series of components that come together to form a whole unit: hardware, tools and geographic data. The tools are designed to capture, store, analyse and display geographically referenced information. Today, this information is very important because it is a strategic asset that provides modern organisations with knowledge and added value. The emergence of new information and communication technologies has led to the development of new applications and new ways of understanding and managing our environment.

No single tool is used for graphic exploitation. Instead, despite working mainly with ArcGIS, the aim is to clearly convey the concepts and enable the student to use the various tools on the market indiscriminately (QGIS, gvSIG, etc.). The practical sessions will cover the functionalities of ArcGIS in depth, and QGIS will be studied after this knowledge has been consolidated.

We will also look at "where we are heading" and the evolution of geographic information systems. What do the concepts of Big Data and Smart Cities entail?

Students will use Carto, MapBox and Leaflet to publish and display data from several sources, e.g. from social networks and Open Data repositories. In order to do this, they must be able to access the data sources, use visualisation techniques and the various possibilities provided by the new platforms for publishing maps. Maps customised via web will be created quickly and easily using techniques and services that will be covered on the course.

How many shops do I have within 100 m? What is the impact of UBER in Barcelona? These questions can be answered by students taking this module, since they will be able to create a web application and implement geolocation functionalities when they learn to work with Carto.

The postgraduate course in GIS Technologies aims to teach students the entire method of creating a GIS from the very beginning, i.e. starting from the source and creation of graphic data, followed by the exploitation and analysis of those data with the appropriate tools, and finally creating GIS WEB applications. At the end of the course, students will be able to publish and visualise data from many different sources, such as data from social networks.
Aims
  • To distinguish between different formats and sources of graphic information (vector, raster, autoCAD, shape, etc.).
  • To use the various tools on the market both for work on mapping (MicroStation) and for exploiting information (ArcGIS, QGIS) and to visualise it on the web (learning to create web pages with HTML, CSS and Javascript).
  • To generate a result based on the capture or loading of the data (themed maps, printouts, reports).
  • To provide basic programming skills.
  • To create small web pages presenting the GIS solution designed.
  • To create applications for web visualisation of data.
  • To configure map servers.

In theory, any professional wishing to work with data with a geospatial component is qualified to take the master's degree, and as such its students can come very diverse and numerous fields.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
