Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools are an organized integration of hardware, software and geographic data designed to capture, store, analyse and display geographically referenced information. This information is crucial in today's society, because it is a strategic asset that provides knowledge and added value to modern organizations. These technologies contain exceptional capabilities for working with the territory, and provide new ways of understanding and managing our environment.

The implementation of GIS geoinformation requires the modernization of human systems and teams in all kinds of organizations working in land management, urban planning and local management. The course aims to provide continuous training and reorientation for professionals related to land management, and the local or municipal scale (among others) needing to incorporate Geographic Information Technologies (CIT).

The course Territorial Applications of GIS combines the bases of the study, case studies and application of methods and IT techniques in GIS in practical workshops aimed at improving the management, organization and processing of territorial and municipal geoinformation.

Students will work on constructing descriptors, indicators and territorial and urban analysis parameters, on the development of 3D cartographies for the visualization of data, on advanced experiences in local management linked to open data and the new smart city concepts, among other areas. The application workshops will also include: geolocation, geo marketing and mobility analysis and strategies. Various platforms are used during the course, including ArcGis, QGIS and Geoomedia. For better monitoring of the program, it is advisable to have basic knowledge of ArcGis and QGIS. In the case of not having this knowledge, the possible access of the interested parties will be studied personalized.

A distinguishing feature compared to other courses is the high return on the practical learning provided by a high level of working autonomy and effective technical training for dealing with high level GIS competencies in the integration of geospatial data, in the world of business, creating consultancy projects and GIS implementation, territorial studies and documents, urban planning management, and the implementation of local GIS.

The teaching staff has extensive experience in the implementation of GIS projects in industry and government, as proven evidence by the projects undertaken in the GIS field in the city's Virtual Modelling Laboratory.

  • Definition of strategic territorial analysis vectors.
  • Application workshop: for implementing areas of activity in ArcGis.
  • Concepts and tools for Land Planning and Management.
  • Case studies: analysis and proposal vs planning and monitoring.
  • Content and exploitation of data from the l'Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya, Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, Mapa Urbanístic de Catalunya databases and other open data, such as the Government of Catalonia's data.
  • Introduction to data manipulation and spatial analysis with the Python and R languages, with their open source libraries.

Advanced Analytical Systems: Aggregations, Geopositioning and Routing
  • Introduction to GeoMeddia technology.
  • Implementation of a GIS project, for the territorial study.
  • Application workshop: connections, visualizations, filters, creation and editing of capes, usual spatial analysis functionalities in a GIS and advanced analytical functionalities (functional attributes, geostatistical aggregations).
  • Linear spatial analysis with the Transportation extension: dynamic segmentation and routing (calculation of minimum roads, accessibility isochrons).

  • Introduction to Smart Cities.
  • Experiences and case studies.
  • Definition, bases, descriptors and parameters of the city.
  • Application workshop: Calculating urban fabric indicators in ArcGis.

    • The GIST - the engine for transparency, resilience and the Smart City.
    • Projects and new initiatives linked to open data.
  • Application workshop: Preparing databases for urban analysis in the GIS in a local tool in ArcGis.
    • Processing land registry data, planning and other open data sources.
    • Representing results on 3D maps and volumes.

Geomarketing and Geolocation Strategies
  • Introduction to using GIS tools in Geolocation and Geomarketing in GeoMedia.
  • Application workshop: geolocation and mobility analysis and strategies.
Postgraduate qualification issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued by virtue of the provisions of art. 7.1 of Organic Law 2/2023 of 22 March, concerning the University System, and art. 36 of Royal Decree 822/2021 of 28 September, which establishes the organisation of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality. A prior official university qualification is necessary to obtain it. Otherwise, the student will receive a certificate of completion of the course issued by the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya. Lifelong learning studies at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya are approved by the University's Governing Council on an annual basis. (See details appearing on the certificate).
