Why this programme?
The demand for health services in our society is growing. The population pyramid is being turned upside down, and the prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing. Meanwhile, citizens are becoming increasingly well-informed and connected, and making much greater demands on the health system. The convergence of these factors is leading to a paradigm shift in which technology will be the key factor in guaranteeing the new health model of the future, which also makes the individual the focus and the centre of the process.
Technology has been successfully deployed in various sectors, but it is now just beginning to revolutionise the health sector. Although applied technologies such as robotic surgery and connected health are now realities, an effective e-health strategy will use the potentials offered by disruptive technologies to provide a better service for people, which will contribute to improving their quality of life. Artificial Intelligence (IA) robots with clinical knowledge and Big Data to undertake precision medicine are examples of this. The strategic use of ICT applied to the health sector therefore creates new challenges for the future, which are a great opportunity for professional development.
One of the current challenges for organisations linked to the health field is to identify professionals with a technical profile, who have the training necessary to work with new products and services, and who can undertake innovative projects in the field of health working with multidisciplinary teams, in which medical and health professionals play a major role.

For these reasons, the UPC School is organising the Postgraduate Course in e-Health Technology Innovation, which has a highly practical focus, and is aimed at these professionals, who will be responsible for developing innovative new ICT services and models applied to health and well-being. The postgraduate course links the needs of the world of health with ICT. For this reason, it includes training on the specific characteristics of the health sector, and on disruptive technologies applied to e-health (AI, support systems for clinical decisions, 3D bioprinting; big data, supercomputing, robotics, serious games, image processing, deep learning, etc.). It also addresses the ethical, legal and business aspects that arise as a result. Professionals with an extensive background of innovation in medical technologies, in clinical practice and in the development of digital services (including the Electronic Health Record) are working with the programme.

e-health. Transition, tools and requirements
The foundations of the e-health environment are presented. The course provides an overview of the scenario of possibilities that is opening up with the incorporation of new technologies in the health world, and the wide range of new services that may appear.
In order to address current and future challenges and services, we must examine the available tools and the implementation requirements, and consider their technological evolution.

  • Definition of new health service models.
  • Differential roles in the health system.
  • The technological revolution and its evolution.
  • Privacy, security and confidentiality.
  • Interoperability and certifications (legislation).
  • Multidisciplinary teams as a strategy for the implementation of e-health solutions.

The medical and social area of e-health
Technology professionals are provided with the foundations of knowledge of the medical field, so that they can understand the needs and requirements of healthcare and study them in depth.
The course presents the social sphere and care for people, to facilitate the design of technological applications and services in this scenario.

  • Lines of care. Organisation of the health system.
  • Medical and surgical specialities. Diagnostics and treatments.
  • Pathologies and prevalences. Technological needs in the medical field.
  • The concept of public healthcare.
  • People and ageing.
  • Prevention as a basic tool for a better service.
  • Chronicity and mental health.

Technologies for e-health
Technologies suitable for finding solutions to the challenges posed are presented and evaluated. The main electronic and communications technologies applied and applicable to the health field are studied. The current main paradigms, such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data or the Internet of Things (IoT) will be examined, and applied to the needs of health and the new services related to it.

  • The state of the art of applicable technologies. Electronics, ICT and its evolution.
  • Sensors and wearables.
  • Robotics and its impact on the world of health.
  • The use of Serious Games as a therapeutic and motivational tool.
  • Processing information and images, in combination with new modelling and diagnostic techniques.
  • Big Data as support for decision making and predictive analytical techniques.
  • IoT from the perspective of health services.

The challenges associated with e-health
The evolution of electronic and communications technologies opens up new challenges which are a great opportunity for professionals in the e-health sector (personalised medicine, personalised diagnostics and treatments, the emergence of genomics, disruptive new technologies, etc.).
The solutions implemented must not only be really useful for the people who receive them, but they must also be perceived to be so. The course will cover standard user-centred design techniques in the field of health applications.

  • Design of user-centric services with the innovative use of technology.
  • The patient's experience and its impact on the improvement of services.
  • Digitisation of services and its impact on people.
  • Quality of services.
  • The role of technology in the services of the future. Are there any limits?
  • New business models applied to the health field.
  • Roles in the system of evolution.

Postgraduate course final project
The postgraduate course final project will enable students to implement a solution that can be applied to the e-health sector. The objective is to promote a multidisciplinary project, working with healthcare professionals.
Postgraduate diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Assessment criteria
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
Virtual campus
The students on this postgraduate course will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

She has participated in 41 research projects, has 71 publications, author of 6 books, in addition to lectures, conferences, communications and teaching courses.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.
