Why this programme?

The complexity of today's industrial and commercial buildings shows the importance of planning and calculating optimal installations. Traditional plumbing, gas, electricity and lighting installations and innovative safety and air conditioning measures and increasingly essential alternative energies are also found in modern buildings.

The UPC School's postgraduate course in Projection, Design and Calculation of Mechanical, Electrical and Special Installations is designed to meet the demand for engineers, architects and quantity surveyors wishing to specialise, update or broaden their knowledge in the installations field.

This postgraduate course includes teaching by professionals from the various sectors involved in installations: air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, sanitation, solar energy, gas, electricity and other less common installations. It is a wide-ranging and comprehensive programme that provides an overview of the installations sector in buildings and industrial facilities.

Students must undertake a final project on air conditioning, electrical installations and anti-fire and safety installations, supervised by the lecturer who has taught the relevant part in the programme.

The entire programme of the postgraduate course has been designed to comply with the new Technical Building Code.

  • To apply the applicable regulations (Technical Building Code, low voltage regulations, Regulations on Heating Installations in Buildings, etc).
  • To make the calculations, checks and assessments for new industrial installations to be planned in a business.
  • To obtain an overview of the installations sector in buildings and industrial facilities.

Mechanical Installation Design and Calculations
  • Air-conditioning installations (39 hours)
    • Air conditioning. Environmental thermal comfort. Basic energy balance in a building's system.
    • Description of an air-conditioning installation. Calculating the loads on a building's system. Psychometrics. The bases of theory.
    • Cold-hot air generating system. Selecting and specifying units. Sizing. Fans. Pumps.
    • Heat recovery. Control and regulating system. Diagrams.

  • Ventilation and smoke extractor fan installations (12 hours)
    • General criteria for ventilating spaces. Determining required airflow. Applicable regulations.
    • Ventilation systems. Ambient air renewal. Localised intakes.
    • Ventilator fans: types and characteristics. Air circulation through ducts.
    • Building insulated ducts with fibreglass insulation. Acoustic attenuation in ventilation ducts and air-conditioning.

  • Plumbing and liquid pump installations. (12 hours)
    • Basic hydrostatic principles.
    • Pressure loss. Water installation regulations.
    • Estimating and calculating flows.The different types of tubes and gauges.
    • Pumps and pressure groups.Calculating and designing water pumping stations.
    • Industrial installations. Domestic Hot Water (DHW) installations.

  • Sanitacion and Water treatment and Facilities Installations for Gray and Rainwater (15 hours)
    • Preliminary considerations. Fundamental concepts.
    • The structure of a sanitation network. Calculations for sanitation systems.
    • Basic concepts of purification. Water treatment.
    • Components sanitisation network. Mechanical calculations for underground plumbing.
    • Greywater and rainwater installations in buildings.
    • Greywater installations: Water consumption studies in buildings. Current legislation. Centralized and de-centralized units. Devices. Treatment, sizing and design of units.
    • Rainwater installations: Legislation, structure, sizing and design of rainwater rendering installations. Elements, treatment and additional maintenances.

  • Solar thermal energy installations (12 hours)
    • Basic principles. Available solar energy. Calculation methods. Climate zones, orientation, inclination, etc. Calculating the surface area for solar energy collection. Calculations for the different parts of the installation.
    • Types of solar collectors. Adjustment and control.
    • Maintenance and regulations. RITE (Thermal installation code in buildings), CTE (Technical building code), etc.

  • Compressed air installations (12 hours)
    • Introduction to the theory of air. The different parts of a pneumatic installation. Regulations.
    • The qualities and constraints of compressed air. Calculations for sections and pressure loss. Maintenance.
    • Plan of action for a compressed air installation.

  • Natural gas installations (12 hours)
    • Applicable rules and regulations. Design and location criteria for pipes, parts and accessories.
    • Gas installation applications.
    • Natural gas installation schemes. The components of a gas installation.
    • Installations that require a project.
    • Applications for gas in commercial and industrial locations. Proper location and connection conditions for connecting a natural gas installations. Permanent and mobile Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanks.Symbols. Preliminary measurement for gas installations. The working project for gas installation in a building.

  • Oil Hydraulics Installations (12 hours)
    • Oil hydraulic energy transmission systems.
    • Oils used in oil hydraulic systems. Properties and grades.
    • Pumps. Actuators. Cylinders and motors.
    • Conventional techniques: pressure measurement and directional control valves. Accumulators. Common configurations.
    • Proportional techniques: common configurations.
    • CEN and ISO general regulations.
    • Oil hydraulic installation maintenance.

  • Electrical Installations (30 hours)
    • Introduction to low-voltage electrical installation and relating regulations.
    • Parts or elements of an electrical installation.
    • Governing regulations.
    • Indoor domestic installations. Levels of electrification. Points of use, number and features of circuits. Direct and indirect contacts. Ground installations. Section calculation.
    • Implementing regulations, calculation criteria and selecting components.
    • Installations in industries and services. Analyzing the needs.
    • Electrical distribution: main electric switchboard, secondary switchboards, lines and channels.
    • Selecting conductors and protections.
    • Public buildings. Additional supply. Network commuting.
    • Compensating reactive energy.

    • Energy-saving in industrial and commercial installations.

  • Lighting Installations (12 hours)
    • Light: concepts and intensity. Light sources and the technology behind them.
    • Lights: components, characteristics and photometry.
    • Lighting projects: parameters and regulations. Interior and industrial lighting.
    • Lighting projects: exterior lighting. Regulations, intensity, light pollution and calculations.

  • Single Installations. Power generators (12 hours)
    • Main Elements of a power generator. Functioning modes.
    • Technical features and functioning modes.
    • Control systems and commuters between generator and grids.
    • Generator synchronizing.
    • Mechanical installation. Location criteria.
    • Vibrations. Cooling and ventilation.
    • Electrical installation: Ground posts. Soundproofing.
    • Regulations. Legislation.
    • Power calculation criteria for generators.
    • Operation under non-lineal loads.
    • Starting asynchronous motors.
    • Calculating the necessary generator power for an installation. Case Study.

  • Fire prevention and safety installations (18 hours)
    • Introduction to fire. Flammable materials. Exterior agents. Fire extinguishing equipment and installations.
    • Fire alarm and detection system installation: control centres. Sirens. Fire extinguishing devices, equipment and systems organised according to the origin and type of fire. Compartmentalisation and evacuation. Water based extinguishing systems. Storage tanks. Extinguishing fire using interior and exterior fire hydrants.
    • Rules and regulations. Building code. Fire safety rules regulations for industrial spaces. Fire prevention installation regulations and UNE-EN regulations.

Degree
Postgraduate diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.

The students on this postgraduate course will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
