Why this programme?
The UPC has a clear commitment to collaborate with the automotive sector, as shown by the 10 editions of the Master MIGIA, 2 degrees of expertise in automotive, the existence of Chairs SEAT and Applus, postgraduate training in active safety and passive and body, automotive materials, etc., the organization of conferences, seminars, conferences, etc... and participation in R & D in different fields (materials, nanomaterials , electric vehicles , electricity and electronics , security, etc. . ) . The Government of Spain has opted for training and innovation as key elements for economic development and pays special attention to the automobile sector. The automotive industry is one of the main engines of the national economy, being Catalonia one of the main Spanish and European regions in terms of activity in this sector. The most demanded technical profiles by this industry are related with R & D, design and engineering (automotive sector report, CEAM 2010).

The contents of this postgraduate course, are teach, by the automotive industry professionals specialized in different areas such:

  • The development of electrical system and wire harness in a vehicle.
  • The different sources of energy, and its management.
  • Electric powertrain vehicles.
  • Electronic communication architecture.
  • Analyze and reduce the susceptibility of components and parts to conducted or induced interference (Electromagnetic Compatibility).
  • The development of new electronic control units to reduce cost and weight of the vehicle.
  • The manufacture of lighting systems.
And others detailed in the specific competencies of the program.

This situation forces the sector to hire specialists from outside our borders and / or current defined jobs, with the consequent use of resources without a comprehensive program of learning or a structure that facilitates the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Furthermore, continuous changes, tools, technologies, social requirements, legislation, etc..., advise that permanent education will be needed for professionals I a near future, to keep knowledge and innovation for facing the challenge.

It is noteworthy that Catalonia has the only center of automotive design in Spain, so the need for professionals with expertise in this area is critical and is not covered by the current academic offerings. There are numerous regional providers and companies that are part of the automotive industry and whose competitiveness at national and international level depends largely on their professional training. So this are the main reasons that made us start this learning program.
Aims
The main goal is to train ELTICA’s students to be able to:

  • Identify, formulate and optimally solve problems in the electrical and electronic areas of the automobile.
  • Understand the technologies, trends and the most common tools in this area.
  • Create, design, implement and adopt research methods that lead to the generation of knowledge and innovation.
  • Knowing and applying existing technologies in the market as well as emerging technologies and acquire the skills necessary to propose applications
  • Understand and convey information-knowledge from scientific and technical documentation.
  • Analyze and propose projects considering the different aspects of economic activity, with sustainability criteria.
Who is it for?
As a result of the training, the course qualifies for positions of responsibility:

  • Designing any kind of electrical and electronic systems, especially for automotive.
  • Developing and testing in different areas.
  • Prototyping.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Solving exercises
Solutions are worked on by practising routines, applying formulas and algorithms, and procedures are followed for transforming the available information and interpreting the results.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
Visits
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Problem-based learning (PBL)
An active learning methodology that enables the student to be involved from the beginning, and to acquire knowledge and skills by considering and resolving complex problems and situations.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Workshops
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Solving exercises, questionnaires or exams
Individual tests aimed at assessing the degree of learning and the acquisition of competences.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.
Work placements & employment service
Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
