Why this programme?
The post-graduate programme in Diagnosis and Criteria for Intervention in Architectural Rehabilitation and Restoration is the first part of the Master’s in Architectural Rehabilitation and Restoration and meets the construction sector’s need for professionals specialising in the phases prior to the development of the constructive project. It is a field of professional action which requires knowledge and skills which are not taught in university programmes today.

This knowledge includes historical construction, which is essential to understanding the strange combinations of materials and elements in historical buildings, and their evaluation in terms of performance, structure or inhabitability or safety, in order to obtain the criteria that will allow participants to discern the cultural values of the building. The coordination and convergence of such a broad body of knowledge is the ultimate objective of the post-graduate programme.

Along with that, the recent (2013) reform of the Technical Building Code (TBC) provides greater flexibility in fulfilment of its stipulations, but does so in exchange for greater responsibility for technicians, who are required to have exhaustive knowledge of the constructive-structural characteristics of buildings and their corresponding performance evaluation.

In order to achieve all of these objectives, the post-graduate programme gathers together the extensive experience of its professors over the 12 years of the post-graduate programme on Architectural Restoration in the 6 editions of the Master’s, which has transformed the many students who have pursued it into expert professionals.

Aims
  • To develop knowledge, criteria and research methods to apply in the countless possible intervention cases, bearing in mind the nature and behaviour of historical constructions.
  • To know how to recognise and understand the principles of solid mechanics and continuous materials mechanics applied to historical load-bearing structures and foundations, which are radically different to the methods used today given their lack of resistance to traction.
  • To understand and evaluate the environmental behaviour of historical buildings and of their possible users in order to take advantage of their characteristics, inertias, ventilations, etc., to achieve the maximal comfort and thermal efficiency.
  • To understand the historical evolution and current situation of the criteria on how to address actions in an existing building considering its assets and possible uses.
  • To know how the regulations in force affect historical buildings, whether protected or not, and the methods used to demonstrate “the highest degree of suitability possible”, as required by the new TBC.
  • To understand the evolution of the fields of Rehabilitation and Restoration from their origins until today, and to establish consensual working procedures in order to optimise the basic decisions in intervention projects.
Who is it for?
This course is targeted at professionals in the sector from different fields of training:
  • Architects
  • Building engineers and architectural technicians.
  • Civil engineers and technical civil engineers.
  • Industrial engineers and engineers with different specialisations.
Students in their last years of these degree programmes interested in restoration and rehabilitation.

Other specialised professionals who regularly participate in these projects:
  • Historians, archivists or archaeologists.
  • Restorers, graduates in fine arts.
  • Geologists or petrology professionals.
Candidates with other professional backgrounds may be admitted after a personal interview.

Training Content

List of subjects
9 ECTS 80h
Bases de la Construcción Histórica
FROM THE CLASSICAL WORLD TO THE MODERN MOVEMENT.
Knowledge and criteria of the historical ways of building. Materials and constructive elements whose characteristics are often unfamiliar, such as walls, arches, vaults and domes made of bricks and lime mortar, roof reinforcements and frames made of wood, stuccoes, etc.
5 ECTS 30h
Método Sistémico para la Intervención en la Edificación Histórica
  • Theories of intervention in building rehabilitation or restoration, regardless of whether or not it is a heritage site.
  • Historical development throughout the preceding centuries. Current trends.
  • Presentation and complete application of the Objective-Systemic Method to buildings.
6 ECTS 40h
Métodos de Evaluación y Diagnosis Estructural de Edificios Históricos
  • Identification of the pathological states of the building and formulation of causal hypotheses.
  • Application of graphic models based on force polygons to solve structural equilibrium problems.
4 ECTS 20h
Characterization and Evaluation Previous
FROM PREINDUSTRIAL RULES TO THE TBC
Identification and description of the materials, features and subsystems comprising buildings with the objective of conducting a performance evaluation. This includes the requirements stipulated by the TBC, the Technical Building Code, adapted to the characteristics inherent to historical buildings.
6 ECTS 20h
Workshop de Proyectos y Proyecto Básico
In the workshop, a project will be undertaken which must be delivered in the form of an ideas contest about a historical but not monumental building, with the support of experts in different areas of architectural intervention. The Basic Project is created based on a building chose by each team, on which they apply all the phases in the Systemic Method until reaching a level of specificity equivalent to what is customarily called a preliminary project.
The UPC School reserves the right to modify the contents of the programme, which may vary in order to better accommodate the course objectives.
Degree

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Solving exercises
Solutions are worked on by practising routines, applying formulas and algorithms, and procedures are followed for transforming the available information and interpreting the results.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
Visits
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Flipped classroom
The contents are prepared prior to the face-to-face lessons. Practical sessions take place in the classroom, which enable understanding and application of concepts to real cases and the expansion of knowledge with more technical and specialised details.
Workshops
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Solving exercises, questionnaires or exams
Individual tests aimed at assessing the degree of learning and the acquisition of competences.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Work placements & employment service
Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
