Why this programme?
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is taking root at a rapid pace internationally. This means an increasingly higher level of maturity is required. When a client asks for BIM, they do not simply want models with information about what they are promoting or operating. What they want is for their suppliers, whether they are project drafters, contractors or managers, to use this methodology to offer a product with higher quality, more added value and less risks. This demand means that all professionals in the sector must acquire new skills to complement the roles they are currently engaged in.

Competence in BIM also requires specialisation. For this reason, our postgraduate programme on Open BIM in Modelling, Calculation and Simulation offers four different specialist fields for in-depth study of the particular aspects of each discipline while maintaining a holistic vision. Our innovative learning methodology enables the various specialist fields to interact with each other while focusing on their own content.

Our programme provides offers comprehensive training focused on the instrumental aspects of BIM from the perspective of modelling and advanced information management, which is highly valued by the professional market. In fact, student employability is 100%.

Cost Control
The information models that are created and coordinated using BIM are useless if we are unable to exploit their content in order to make decisions and offer added value by processing their information. A clear example of this is cost control in execution and operation and maintenance costs, where the most important factor is to carry it out as soon as possible, when different design options are being assessed.

We believe that this competence is of general interest, since it enables work to be done on multidisciplinary issues including:
  • Modelling criteria based on the use of BIM.
  • Interconnection between two databases (the models database and the budget database).

This subject focuses on the main strategies for building information modelling specialized, taking into account the specific characteristics of this discipline, as well as the requirements of the people involved. This subject is taught using Autodesk Revit.

Building. Calculation and Simulation
In this subject, students learn to develop visual simulations with Lumion, which enables them to visualize BIM models in realistic and artistic environments. Its main advantage is that it renders in real time, and as such the feedback for the simulation is immediate. This means that the idea behind the project is conveyed much more clearly to the client, and anticipates the spatial and visual benefits of the proposal once it is built.

This subject focuses on the main strategies for structures information modelling specialized, taking into account the specific characteristics of this discipline, as well as the requirements of the people involved. This subject is taught using Autodesk Revit.

Structures Calculation and Simulation
This subject deals with how to use information models to perform structural calculations, and how to re-introduce the results obtained in the design models. The subject covers the information flows necessary to use global software applications such as Autodesk Robot and SAP2000, as well as looking at more local solutions such as CypeCAD and Tricalc.

The objective is for the students to acquire some judgement about the processes necessary to link models with calculation programs, and the modelling criteria that must be taken into account to do so, regardless of the software used in each case.

This subject deals with how to use information models to perform calculations of installations, and how to re-introduce the results obtained in the design models. This subject focuses on the main strategies for information modelling in civil works, taking into account the specific characteristics of this discipline, as well as the requirements of the people involved. This subject is taught using Autodesk Infraworks, Autodesk Civil 3D and Autodesk Revit.

Civil Work. Calculation and Simulation
This subject covers aspects related to calculations of volumes, embankments and plotting with Autodesk Civil 3D, from the point of view of integration with BIM. It also focuses specifically on the concept of interoperability between the various modelling platforms, in order to integrate calculation models with geometric information-rich models.

Degree
Postgraduate diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.

Problem-based learning (PBL)
An active learning methodology that enables the student to be involved from the beginning, and to acquire knowledge and skills by considering and resolving complex problems and situations.
Flipped classroom
The contents are prepared prior to the face-to-face lessons. Practical sessions take place in the classroom, which enable understanding and application of concepts to real cases and the expansion of knowledge with more technical and specialised details.
Workshops
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Solving exercises, questionnaires or exams
Individual tests aimed at assessing the degree of learning and the acquisition of competences.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.

The students on this postgraduate course will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
