Why this programme?
This training programme focuses on the ability required to dynamic analysis of structural behaviour, with an introduction to fluid mechanics, accidental actions, fluid dynamics calculation, the dynamics of structures and the structural calculation linked to the construction process.

The curriculum has been prepared based on the experiences of the teaching team on previous courses at both university level and in the professional sphere. This provides the basis of reference for the contents of this programme, which is supported by the ACE (Association of Structural Consultants) and the IEE (Institute of Structural Studies), the leading institutions in the sector.

Degree
Lifelong learning diploma issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Solving exercises
Solutions are worked on by practising routines, applying formulas and algorithms, and procedures are followed for transforming the available information and interpreting the results.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
Virtual campus
The students on this lifelong learning course will have access to the My_Tech_Space virtual campus, an effective work and communication platform for students, lecturers and course directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space allows students to find background material for their classes, to work in teams, ask their lecturers questions, consult their marks, etc.

  • Maristany Carreras, Jordi
    Doctor Architect Professor of the Department of Technology of Architecture of the UPC. He has been director of the Department of Architectural Structures and is a member of the research group LITA (Laboratory of Innovation and Technology in Architecture). He is a professor of several postgraduate and master's courses. He has participated in outstanding projects such as the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) in the Science and Technology Park of Girona or the integral rehabilitation of the "Estación del Norte" in Barcelona.
Teaching staff
  • Al Farah, Bashar
    Beng. MSc. PE. PhD in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. His research is on advanced numerical simulation of the dynamic structural behavior of buildings that are heavily damaged by earthquakes. Ten years of experience in analysis, design, construction, and supervision of civil engineering structures (high rise buildings, industrial facilities, residential and defense projects, etc.) located in seismic regions, mainly Arab and South American countries. Relevant experience on nonlinear seismic analysis for practical and scientific purposes. High expertise in structural analysis software: ABAQUS, ETABS, OpenSees, PLAXIS, PROKON, REVIT, RISA, ROBOT, SeismoSoft, SAFE, SAP, among others. Partner and developer at SESPID, specialized in developing engineering software for automated detailing and optimization. Wide teaching experience in teaching professional courses for civil engineers and architects. Presently working as a structural consultant in Barcelona.
  • Arnedo Pena, Alfredo
    Beng. MSc. PE. PhD. Wide teaching experience in many subjects linked to Steel Structures. Professor of the Masters Programs "Structural Engineering in Architecture" and "Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics". Wide professional experience in earthquake-resistant design (INYPSA 1984-1999), especially in nuclear power plants. Professional experience in seismic design, protection against impact and explosions (SENER 2003-2012). Spanish delegate to the committee of Eurocode 3 Part 1.3. Spanish delegate to the CEN / TC 135 Committee on Execution. Spanish delegate on the ISO/TC98/SC3/WG9, working on the revision of the ISO 3010 "Seismic actions on structures". Author of books about steel structures. Participation in the European research project "Seismic design of light-gauge steel framed buildings".
  • López Almansa, Francesc
    Beng. MSc. PE. PhD. Forty years' experience as advanced structural consultancy and technology-transfer in buildings. Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Wide lecturing experience in many subjects linked to Structural Analysis and Design. Professor of Master Programs "Structural Engineering in Architecture", "Technology in Architecture" and "Soil Engineering and Earthquake Engineering" at the UPC. Permanent Visiting Professor of several Spanish Universities (Girona, Granada, and Ramon Llull) and Southern Chile in Latin America. Has supervised 15 Doctoral Theses, most of them related to earthquake engineering. Author of more than 200 research papers published in scientific journals and presented at national and international scientific conferences. Has participated in numerous research projects (national and international) financed by public and private funds, having been promoter and coordinator in many of them.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
