UPC School

This programme offers the option of work placements and professional collaborations to participate in R&D projects.

Research is an activity that has been integrated into the process of continuous improvement in a large number of companies, going beyond the academia to become a must for the competitiveness of the industrial sector. The participation of businesses in research is a necessary condition to ensure the transfer of outputs to society, and the training of professionals from businesses to lead research projects and groups becomes a must.

Scientific excellence by itself is not enough to reach maximum effectiveness in a research group. To this end, it also becomes necessary to professionalise the direction and management of the research process. With adequate research direction and management it is possible to optimise efforts, make the available resources more efficient, significantly improve the results for research funds, minimise the risks during the project's execution and maximise the impact of research results.

Research management has its own characteristics, halfway between the academia and industry. Managing a research project does not mean managing a conventional project, neither in the way the idea is conceived nor in the way funding is found nor how the project is implemented nor in the assessment of the project results. Research management is also not simply and purely an academic activity. Without a clear deployment and impact in the market and an associated business model it will be difficult to find the resources to conduct a research project.

Both for public and private research, the high competitiveness requires the highest levels of professionality for all actors involved. Access to international funding, mainly from the EU Framework Programme (Horizon2020), but also from other international agencies, may be key in getting projects of a certain size up and running.

This postgraduate programme offers to the students the opportunity to train with tools and acquire knowledge and skills required to manage projects adequately and to apply their results in the market, for efficient management of research projects and teams, and opens the door to getting successful results in the ever-growing competitive calls to get funding for R&D projects.

More precisely, this activity will be recognised pursuant to section H: Training and personal development –H1: Participation in teaching or pedagogical courses and seminars, general or specific to the field of knowledge, coordinated by the SPD, ICE, academic units, groups of teachers, or other higher education institutions.

  • Belda Reig, Ignasi
    Doctor in Artificial Intelligence (UPC) and computer engineering (URL). As a researcher, he has experience at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Barcelona, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the pharmaceutical multinational AstraZeneca. He is the founder of four biotechnology companies in Catalonia and the United States. He is the Director of Intelligent Pharma, the first of them, which has received a dozen awards for being one of the most innovative start-ups in the country.

    Doctora en Sociologia y miembro de la empresa Ethicas Research & Consulting. Investigadora social centrada en el ámbito de la vigilancia, la privacidad, la resiliencia y el impacto social de la tecnología. Actualmente participa en diversos proyectos europeos vinculados a tecnología, sociedad y seguridad. Previamente había trabajado en el Área de Nuevos Movimientos Religiosos y la Sociología de las organizaciones en cuanto a procesos de difusión de innovaciones culturales. Ha sido miembro destacado en diversos comités organizadores de conferencias y jornadas científicas a nivel nacional e internacional.

    Doctor Ingeniero de Telecomunicaciones. Máster en Gestión y Organización de Empresas. Máster Black Belt en Six Sigma. Estudios de posgrado en ESADE, IESE, IMD, Technology Institute of Pasadena y Center for Industrial Cooperation en Tokio. Asesor de CIRSA donde fue Director General de la División B2B de 2006 a 2015. Anteriormente Vicepresidente Senior de Ingeniería y Calidad en TERRA, General Manager en SONY, Jefe de Ingeniería en ROCA YORK, entre otros. Autor de varios libros sobre innovación y Six Sigma, entre ellos: Innovación: 100 consejos para inspirarla y gestionarla.

  • Borràs Picas, Sara
    Holder of a master's degree in Political Sciences and the Head of the European Projects Office at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia since 2004. She has managed and led European projects within the 5th Framework Programme, and has been responsible for Spanish and Catalan Eurociencia and Connect-EU national projects. She has also acted as an advisor to ANEP (Ministry of Education) and the co-editor of the guide "Management of total costs in the 7th Framework Programme" published by the TTO Universities network and the Government of Catalonia's "Guide to calculating indirect costs in the 7th Framework Programme".
  • Burriel Fuster, Brisa
    Graduate in law from the UB and the holder of a master's degree in Legal Sciences (UPF). She currently works as a lawyer for the UPC' legal services, where she is responsible for the legal aspects related to the execution of research projects. She has extensive experience in the implementation of the legal framework applicable to research, and is an expert on consortium agreements, licenses, intellectual pro- perty and R+D contracts.
  • Fernandez Sirera, Tatiana
    Economista, máster en economia europea (Universitat del Saarland) y doctora en integración europea y relaciones internacionales (UAB). Es funcioneria de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Actualmente trabaja en la Direcció General de Promoción Económica, Competencia y Regulación, donce es responsable de la coordinación de la estrategia Catalunya 2020 y de la estrategia de investigación e innovación para la especialización inteligente de Catalunya (RIS3CAT).
  • Lluch-Ariet, Magí
    Graduate in Computer Science from the UPC, holder of a degree in Advanced Studies in Computer Languages and Systems, and a master's degree in Information Society and Knowledge from the Open University of Catalonia. Head of the Personalized Computational Medicine research unit at and researcher in Engineering department at the UPC. He is an expert research director and international level, and leader of projects funded by the European Commission and Spanish national agencies. Member of the Catalan Artificial Intelligence Association, the "European Association of Research Managers and Administrators" and the Catalan of Computer Engineering.
  • Martí i Costa, Jordi
    Specialist in business collaboration, strategy and innovation. The founder of Altrium, he worked as Coordinator of Strategic Planning at Menta-Auna, Director of Expansion and Innovation at Stenco, Director of Planning at the COEINF and as Product Manager at the Planeta Group, as well as on business start-up projects for Barcelona City Council. He has a degree in Business Sciences and an MBA from ESADE and a Master's degree in Internet Management (ICT). He is a consultant in strategy validated by ACC10 and in innovation validated by Improve-EU.
  • Pegueroles Vallés, Josep
    Doctor in Telecommunications Engineering (UPC). He currently teaches at the ETSEIB, where he is a tenured lecturer at the Department of Telematics Engineering. He researches as a member of the Information Security Group: security protocols in communication networks, especially for medical applications, with an emphasis on the aspects protecting the privacy of users data. Lead researcher of various competitive research projects at Spanish and international level.
  • Purroy Vazquez, Jesús
    Founder of Barcelona Innovation Partners, a company focused on the creation and consolidation of business opportunities in life sciences. Doctor in Biology (UB) and IESE PDD. He was a biomedical researcher in academia and industry in Europe and the USA. In 2007 he joined the Barcelona Science Park, where he acted on several managing positions. For 7 years at the PCB he worked on strategy, sales, consulting on Innovation and Creation of companies, and managed a team of a hundred researchers. In 2012 he co-founded a pharmaceutical company, Enemce Pharma. He is an advisor to several technology companies. He has also devoted some efforts to communicating science, mainly in the form of books and articles.
  • Rovira Pato, Lluís
    Doctor in Biology by the University of Barcelona. Director of CERCA, Institution devoted to support and facilitate the research activity of the R&D Institutes promoted by the Catalan government. His current research activity is in Bibliometry. He started working on research management and evaluation at the Generalitat of Catalonia, where he has been Evaluation Director and Deputy Director in AGAUR (Catalan Agency for University and Research Grants), and Deputy Director General of Research.
  • Torras Garcia, Carles
    Holder of a degree in Industrial Technical Engineering (EUITIB), an MBA from La Salle, a Master's degree in Quality Management (ICT/UPC) and Organizational Development and Process Consulting (Itamar Rogovsky). He has been Director of Quality in several industrial companies and has been linked to innovation since 2002. First as a collaborator with ACCIO, and then as a consultant. He is currently a consultant partner at Vintecpro, a company in advice on innovation.

Postgraduate diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official or recognized university degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree or diploma. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

Virtual Campus
The students on this Postgraduate course will have access to the My_Tech_Space virtual campus, an effective work and communication platform for students, lecturers and course directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space allows students to find background material for their classes, to work in teams, ask their lecturers questions, consult their marks, etc.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers appear annually of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development Employment service .The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
