UPC School

Design is much more than simply sketching or defining forms, objects and products. For a long time now companies have been depending on Design Managers, professionals who work on design as a global process, to look beyond the obvious things that everyone sees. Design is an important asset for a company and it must be planned and managed strategically to provide a business or institution with an identity and a leading role in the market while helping it achieve profitability and customer loyalty.

Design Managers have the opportunity to demonstrate how design can help link creativity with innovation in a way that both concepts can create added value. Design can include a wide array of activities that include planning and developing procedures, technical specifications and other functional characteristics of new products or services.

The task of a Design Manager is to develop, organise, plan and oversee the design resources within an organisation. Products and services created in this way focus on the needs of the client and business objectives at the same time. This course seeks to make the Design Manger an official position given that this position already exists in companies and institutions and because up until now there has not been any specific training dedicated to this area of specialisation.

Aims

  • Provide participants with the tools they need to develop their foresight, creativity and innovation skills.
  • Identify the new role of the design manager as a person who catalyses knowledge and drives new ways of thinking in the collective creation process.
  • Give students the instruments they need to develop their management and emotional intelligence abilities to efficiently lead and coordinate teams.
  • Develop the ability to understand and effectively communicate with design professionals from different disciplines.
  • Position design as strategic element of business excellence.
  • Comprehensively define a project from its conception and planning stages to its execution by utilising management tools.

  • Professionals from design departments and/or managers working in design organisations or institutions.
  • Managers with broad ranging academic training who are not currently recognised as Design Managers but are responsible for the strategic design duties within their companies.
  • External design and/or innovation consultants from diverse backgrounds who are involved in strategic decision consulting for companies.
  • Product Engineer. Brand managers and Product managers.
  • Professionals who work in related areas or who are interested in working in this sector: Architects (with advanced or associates degrees), Industrial Engineers (with advanced or associates degrees), Designers, Degree holders in Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences.

Design Management
6 ECTS. 50 teaching hours.

- The DNA of the design.
- Design planning and strategy and his added value.
- Identification of the need of a new product.
- Operative Management of the design: the direction and the project management.
- Interdepartmental Relations: the design in the organization.
- Competitions of the "Design Manager".
- New functions and tools of the design in the company.

Project
5 ECTS. 25 teaching hours.

Creation of a final project that students will develop using practical content related to the subjects covered during the course.

    Licenciada en Ciencias Económicas por la Universidad de Barcelona y Posgrado en Design Management por la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña. Directora de Innovación y Desarrollo Corporativo del BCD Bercelona Centre de Disseny. Experta en dirección y gestión de proyectos nacionales e internacionales con foco en innovación y diseño, y en proyectos de cooperación internacional.

Founder of Visualteamwork, a platform for co-creating and co-designing.
  • Lecuona López, Manuel
    Doctorate in Fine Arts from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV). Head Professor of Design Management at the UPV School of Design and Engineering. Founding Member of the Design Research and Management Group of the Institute for Design and Manufacturing at the UPV. External assessor for numerous institutions, Spanish and international technological centres and SMEs as an expert in Design Management and Design auditing. Expert in the wood products, furniture, industrial products and consumer goods sectors.

Profesor del IQS - Universitat Ramon Llull en operaciones, gestión industrial y empresarial, gestión de proyectos, planes de empresa y dirección estratégica. Es Presidente de la Comisión de Internacionalización del Colegio de Ingenieros Industriales. Tiene experiencia como consultor con empresas privadas y públicas de Europa. Es socio de Neo Consulting Barcelona, una firma internacional de consultoría centrada en las operaciones y la internacionalización para ayudar a las empresas a ampliar sus fronteras internas y externas. También está desarrollando una nueva empresa dentro del mercado de la salud asociados con las nuevas tecnologías conocida como Worldwide Integral Rehabilitation Systems, que ha obtenido recientemente varios premios como Mejor Iniciativa Empresarial en Cataluña.
  • Guersenzvaig, Ariel
    Diseñador con más de 15 años de experiencia. Es profesor y jefe del área de diseño de interacción y gráfico de la Escuela de diseño e ingeniería ELISAVA. Es doctor (PhD) en teoría del diseño por la University of Southampton (Inglaterra), cuenta con el diploma de estudios avanzados en Investigación en diseño por la Universitat de Barcelona y es licenciado en Information Management por la Hogeschool van Amsterdam (Países Bajos). Ha liderado equipos multidisciplinares y diseñado y definido productos y servicios interactivos para grandes empresas como HP, Texaco, Grupo ING, "la Caixa", Adecco, RACC, Iberia. También ha trabajo para varias empresas más pequeñas y para non-profits. Ha realizado proyectos de innovación centrada en el diseño para la Generalitat de Catalunya, el distrito 22@ o Barcelona Activa. Ha sido socio de Claro Studio, una firma pionera en España en el ámbito del diseño de experiencia de usuario. Ha sido director ejecutivo del Observatorio del Diseño del FAD.

    Licenciado en Química. Actualmente, es Audiovisual & Marketing Leaden Designit Madrid después de la experiencia en su pròpia productora de cine. Desarrolla tareas de diseño de la pròpia comunicación de la empresa, desarrollo de metodologías de diseño de narrativa y de productos audiovisuales en proyectos de innovación. Ha participado en los últimos 5 años en la escuela h2i como professor de prototipo y en el curso sobre Diseño de Productos Digitales de la escuela de la Nave Nodriza de Madrid.
  • Pericas Bosch, Enric
    Arquitecto por la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Máster en Arquitectura del Paisaje. Ha sido arquitecto del Área de Proyectos Urbanos del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, responsable de la redacción de proyectos de espacio público en la ciudad de Barcelona. Ha sido Director del Servicio de Mobiliario y Elementos Urbanos del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, y Director de Proyectos Urbanos y edificación de la empresa Municipal ProEixample. Ha diseñado para empresas del sector diversos elementos urbanos, especializándose como diseñador industrial. Director Editor de Elementos Urbanos y de Paisaje de ESCOFET. Presidente de ADI-FAD Asociación de Diseñadores Industriales del FAD. Mantiene el ejercicio liberal de la profesión de arquitecto en la ejecución de obras de espacio público, edificación y diseño industrial así como la actividad docente.

    10 años como planner y director de servicios al cliente en agencias de publicidad (ABM Servicios de Comunicación y MAV&co- Socio director). Más de 15 años como responsable de marqueting en empresas de servicios y distribución comercial (Baqueira / Beret S.A.; Corporación Banesto: Oro Vivo S.A.). Miembro del COOB (responsable de banderas de ceremonias y premiación). Colegiado del colegio Oficial de Publicitarios y Relaciones Públicas de Catalunya. Actualmente es asesor de empresas PYME en las áreas de gestión directiva, comercial y marqueting, desarrollo de estrategias de posicionamiento de productos y marcas, así como el diseño y la puesta en marcha de campañas de comunicación y promocionales.
  • Vinyets Rejon, Joan
    Es Doctor en Comunicación Social por la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Licenciado en Antropología Social y Cultural por la Universidad de Barcelona, Master en Diseño por la Domus Academy de Milán y BA (Hons) en Design por la University of Southampton. Es miembro del Design Management Institute, la American Anthropology Association y ESOMAR. Ha desarrollado su actividad en el campo de la innovación aplicando la antropología y el diseño para innovar. Ha trabajado en proyectos en África, América, Asia y Europa colaborando con empresas e instituciones en crear nuevas ideas y transformarlas en valor para la sociedad. Ha colaborado con empresas como Hewlett Packard, Intel, Vodafone, Unilever, Kraft, Danone, GBStar, Ford, Novartis, AstraZeneca, Orange, BancSabadell, La Caixa, Roca, etc. en el diseño y desarrollo de innovaciones en productos y servicios. Ha sido pionero en Europa en la aplicación de metodologías provenientes de la antropología para la innovación y el diseño.

Degree
Postgraduate diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official or recognized university degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree or diploma. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

The students on this Postgraduate course will have access to the My_Tech_Space virtual campus, an effective work and communication platform for students, lecturers and course directors and coordinators.
