Fuentes, Organización y Explotación de Datos Gráficos

Lifelong learning course. Semi-distance.

UPC School

This lifelong learning course can be attended as part of the master's degree Geographical Information Systems or as part of the postgraduate course GIS Technologies.

In this first contact with the world of GIS, the starting point for working with Geographic Information System is to know what it is and where it comes from graphic information. For this purpose there is a cartographic base for students dealing with topics such as the different file formats, CAD type mapping, etc. From there, the next step is to analyze and exploit the information graphically. Do not use a single tool but, despite working primarily with ArcGIS, the goal is to convey clearly the concepts of GIS and allow the student to use the various tools on the market either. The last step is to keep all this information and in this sense, the goal is to teach the initialization and load data graphs in the system by installing and configuring a database.

  • Interpret maps and work with it.
  • Understand the basic concepts of cartography.
  • Work with any existing GIS.
  • Analyse and exploit geospatial information.
  • To acquire a basic knowledge of programming.
  • Creation of tools to build simple programs.
  • Log into the environment of databases

Who is it for

  • University graduates in social areas such as economics, geography, politics, etc.
  • University graduates in scientific and technological fields as physical and environmental sciences.
  • Geographers, surveyors, archaeologists, geologists, ...
  • Business managers, directors of strategy and entrepreneurs who want to explore new business opportunities in this area.
  • Architects and technical engineers.
  • Engineers of roads, canals and ports and technical engineers of public works.
  • Industrial engineers of different specializations.
  • Telecommunications and computer engineers and technical specialties.
  • Technical areas of management and administration of the territory, public or private.
  • Any professional who wants to work with data that are composing geospatial.

The program is realized in the form of distance learning. Students held several workshops and practical classes will be compulsory and graded. For the implementation of practices outside the classroom, students have support manuals and assistance from teachers.
