Landscape Architecture Extended

Master's degree. Face-to-face.

UPC School

The master’s programme: Master in Landscape Architecture Barcelona is focussed on project questions, and management and maintenance of the landscape while maintaining a commitment to current issues. It also places an emphasis on the need to continue investigating the big issues in landscape architecture while at the same time backing the exploration of emerging ideas.

The master’s programme Màster Arquitectura del Paisatge was founded in 1982-83, and it was the first masters at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the next course will be its 35th anniversary. Throughout this period over 578 professionals have taken this course, which covers a very particular niche in the training for professionals in landscape architecture.

The programme is made up of around 60% project work. The 40% remaining involves acquiring knowledge through attending theory-conference classes given by expert professionals as a complement to the design process aspect of all the workshops.

At the end of the course, the students will have to prepare a final project, which will include spending a period in a landscape architect’s office and doing their thesis.

These courses carried out at the UPC are validated by the International Federation of Landscape Architects – Europe (IFLA – Europe) as being equivalent to all the other course that have been taken all over the world in the last 150 years and will allow anyone successfully completing these course to work as a landscape architect all over Europe.

The master's programme BCN Master in Landscape Architecture Extended is an intensive programme (developed over 18 months) made up of four core or postgraduate workshops, three intensive international workshops, one critique on contemporary landscape projects and a final project. This final project will involve a period of work experience in a landscape architect's office for a minimum of 10 weeks along with a thesis, and each student's personal and critical research project.

Each workshop will deal with current and real situations presented in a specific social and economic context. The first stage of the project will be a proposed field visit with the students organised in multi-discipline groups to carry out the project.

These workshops will be led by expert teachers in the field of intervention and with recognised professional experience. They will be responsible for tutoring and managing, through correcting and guiding the students in their projects.

The lectures and conferences will be given by recognised and experienced academics and professionals to help the students gain the required knowledge and understanding of the concepts applicable to their projects.

A corrective assessment will be carried out half-way through the workshop (week 3) and a final presentation (week 6) at the end of the course.
