Why this continuing education master's degree?
This course seeks to offer viable proposals for sustainable growth that do not stop the growth of the city. It provides tools for professionals who are already working in the field of territorial planning in general, and specifically, for all of those people who are specialised in making territorial planning compatible with the environment. The way an urban project is designed, how it is integrated into the territory and how it affects the environmental quality in the area are concepts that help make up an important part of sustainable architecture. Land use regulation plays a fundamental role on the road to a more sustainable future, which has been established by a series of public political research projects and strategies that have been carried out both here in Spain and in the European framework.

The time has passed when metropolises experienced out of control, disorganised and chaotic growth, a time in which the limited capacity of these areas to absorb new habitants and offer them the necessary resources for their daily life was not heeded. Nowadays, public administrations are working to guarantee the supply of these resources (water, electricity, gas, rubbish collection service) and have designed projects aimed at building sustainable cities. Among the instruments used to do this are the local agenda 21s. These projects include transversal politics that take into account everything from mobility, the landscape, and waste to urban structure.

In the case of foreign students or Spaniards architects; without knowledge of the Legal Framework for Planning and Urban Management in Spain, conducting matter Introduction to Urban Law Spanish, which provides a set of introductory content to ensure a common minimum knowledge base, useful for future realization is recommended the master.

Aims

Generals

  • Study the different areas of territorial and urban planning as well as the management of the city in this 21st century, always from the perspective of making a city through sustainable development.

  • The genesis of urban planning, its evolution and territorial and urban problems generated from the industrial revolution.
  • Study of urban paradigms:
    • The urban phenomenon of the twentieth century.
    • Urban expansion and suburbanization versus compactness.
    • Crisis and decadence of urban centers.
    • The monocentric city and polycentric models.
    • The evolution of the current city "post-Fordism".
    • The economy and the city of knowledge.
    • The environmental, economic and social sustainability of urban structures.
    • Immigration and social segregation, closed neighborhoods, metropolitanization, megalopolis, intermediate cities, among others.
  • The European territorial strategy. The balanced development of the regions. The European Territorial Agenda. Towards an Inclusive, Smart and Sustainable Europe of Diverse Regions.
  • Spanish urban law. Concept and evolution of urban law in the Spanish state. The principles and structure of the regulatory system of urbanism. Urban planning techniques: classification and qualification of the land, the legal regime of the land and the execution of the planning.
  • Territorial planning in Catalonia is explained at a regional level. Study of the Territorial Plans, Territorial Plans and the Master Plans, in addition to other sectoral plans of incidence in the territory such as mobility, housing or infrastructure.

Management, Governance and Urban Policies
  • Analysis of the different policies on land and housing, with special emphasis on the review of good practices of European housing policies, as well as from the point of view of their historical evolution and in the analysis and achievement of their objectives.
  • Relations between land policy and the real estate market.
  • Factors that from urban planning can influence the normalization of the land market, among other objectives.

  • Knowledge of geographic information systems, through the teaching of ArcGis software.

Sustainable Urbanism
  • Ecological foundations of environmental science. Urban Ecology Evolution of environmental awareness and the concept of sustainability.
  • Matter cycles, energy flows, diversity and information. Information and entropy.
  • The city and the territory as ecosystems. Ecological cycles (the cycle of water, carbon, ...) and the effect that human action has on them, especially urban development. The metabolism of the city and the ecological footprint.
  • Renewable and non-renewable natural resources. Soil as a non-renewable resource.
  • The ecological matrix of the territory: territorial systems of free spaces, the conservation of biological diversity and ecological connectivity. The rural space. Planning and sustainable management of the landscape.
  • Ecological urbanism, the origin and evolution of sustainability in the territory and the city. The principles of Ecological Urbanism, Ecocity, Smart Growth, New Urbanism and the certifications for sustainable development such as Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED for ND) and BREEAM Communities.
  • Sustainability indicators. Main international references. Resilience of cities in the face of climate change.   • Basic scientific knowledge on climate change and urban climatology.
  • Analysis techniques of the urban climate, in order to know the possible adaptation measures in the small scale and the implementation within the processes of urban planning, that is, in the large scale.
  • Workshops where proposals for measures of adaptation to climate change in small and large scale work groups will be developed, as well as a role play.
  • Outputs of field work with the taking of climatic measures and practical exercises, such as the preparation of Climatopes and adaptation and recommendation measures in urban planning.

  • Environmental control instruments.

Smart Cities: Urbanism and Technology
  • Intelligence and the City: cities have always accumulated human intelligence and technological innovations.
  • Technological Revolutions: from the agricultural to the industrial revolution, and from the industrial to the information revolution.Analysis of the changes experienced by Cities in the Information Age.
  • Smart Cities in the era of knowledge, information and globalisation, based on information and communication technologies applied to government, management and public participation.
  • Analysis of case studies, reviewing three of the six areas that make up smart cities: economics, mobility and the environment, which aim to bring technologies into widespread use in order to create more sustainable, digital and competitive cities.
  • The effects of ICTs on the city and the territory, from the economic, cultural, environmental and social perspectives.
  • Practical workshops on the virtual city. Visits will be scheduled to institutions, spaces and organisations that collaborate with cities and are part of this network of smart cities.
  • Technical visits will take place (in the morning) to places of interest linked to the content of the subject, including visits to institutions such as TRAM, Bicing and Ecoparc Besós, among others.

Project
  • The final master project is the project or research work that the student develops at the same time that he is studying the master, applying the knowledge acquired in each of the modules that make up the program. The start date is from the second semester and tutorials are held throughout the master.
  • The work is done on a project of territorial or urban scope raised in class and can be done as a group or individually depending on the scope and objectives of the project.
  • The purpose of the project is to reflect the set of knowledge acquired about urban planning and sustainability of the master by carrying out a work with a professional approach, such as territorial analysis, environmental impact or urban planning, through the preparation of plans and programs. The delivery of this project is the conclusion of the master studies.

Degree
Continuing education master's degree in Urban Planning and Sustainability, issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued by virtue of the provisions of art. 7.1 of Organic Law 2/2023 of 22 March, concerning the University System, and art. 36 of Royal Decree 822/2021 of 28 September, which establishes the organisation of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality. A prior official university qualification is necessary to obtain it. Otherwise, the student will receive a certificate of completion of the programme issued by the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya. Lifelong learning studies at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya are approved by the University's Governing Council on an annual basis. (See details appearing on the certificate).

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.



Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Solving exercises
Solutions are worked on by practising routines, applying formulas and algorithms, and procedures are followed for transforming the available information and interpreting the results.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
Visits
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.

He is director of the Doctorate Course in Urban and Architectural Management and Valuation, a unique programme in Spain as it combines the economic, legal, social and environmental processes that underlie the planning of the city and the territory. He is the author of numerous articles related to the real estate economy, the analysis of territorial structures and the city. His most well-known books focus on the theoretical analysis of the formation of land value and on the practical application of valuation methods. Dr Roca is a national and international benchmark in the valuations field, and especially those related to urban management processes. He has been a Spanish pioneer in teaching valuations at the postgraduate level since the appearance of master's degree courses in the early 1980s.

Dr Roca is a national and international benchmark in the valuations field, and especially those related to urban management processes. He has been a Spanish pioneer in teaching valuations at the postgraduate level since the appearance of master's degree courses in the early 1980s.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
