Why this continuing education master's degree?

Additive manufacturing has the potential to completely transform the manufacture of materials, which means that many companies of different sizes and verticals are considering introducing 3D printing as a complement to their current manufacturing technologies.

Over the last decade, we have seen the emergence of new 3D printing processes, new materials with enhanced performance levels, higher quality components, smaller machines, and optimised and cheaper production processes. This has all shifted the traditional manufacturing market towards additive manufacturing. Furthermore, companies are increasingly aware that the correct implementation of additive manufacturing can significantly reduce material waste, the number of steps in the production process, the quality of stock and the number of parts in an item.

This change requires companies and their teams to have knowledge and a clear strategy for success in implementing additive manufacturing. However, as in many disruptive technologies, the sector has grown at a much faster rate than the pace of learning by professionals.

The master's degree in additive manufacturingis a response to this need of the sector. The goal is to train professionals in these new technologies so that they acquire the methods and skills required to become highly skilled workers. This will help companies to adopt additive manufacturing, redefine the current production paradigm, and disrupt the market with innovative products and business models.

The master's degree combines theoretical and practical classes based on learning by doing. Students will also work side by side with experts from various companies in the sector such as HP, to solve real and current challenges set by companies in different sectors.

Aims

The objectives of the master's degree are defined through:

  • Additive Manufacturing knowledge
    • Understand the fundamental principles and workflow for AM.
    • Understand when and how AM can create value across the entire product lifecycle in terms of cost, performance and sustainability
    • Understand the present and future of AM technologies, deep dive into the fundamentals of each of them, understand the advantages and when to select each of them.
    • Get connected to the AM industry world news and events
    • Review fundamentals of solid mechanics and material science to become a well-versed AM engineer
    • Understand material properties related to the different technologies, to better select a material for a specific application.
  • Additive Manufacturing skills
    • Understand how to design for additive manufacturing and how to take full advantatge of the technology
    • Acquire the creativity and knowledge of a skilled CAD designer to design, modify or improve a 3D model.
    • Acquire knowledge in mechanical simulation techniques to be able to validate AM designs
    • Learn how to take full advantage of advanced tools such as generative design, topology optimization, consolidation or lattice structures that best leverage the benefits of the additive process.
    • Get awareness of reverse engineering techniques, metrology and others AM related technologies
    • Acquire the post-processing skills needed to meet the desired outcome of the part design.
  • Design methodologies, business considerations and project management skills
    • Gather critical thinking, problem-solving, management and communication skills involved in the entire manufacturing
    • Use and master cutting edge online collaborative tools to scale collaboration and creativity with confidence & bring your team together, anytime, anywhere.

Industry Project Challenge

The Master's degree programme aims to be connected with current industry AM challenges. For this reason, in this module students will work in teams to solve a challenge proposed by a company in order to propose a solution, plan the manufacturing process and develop the business model.

The aim is to simulate a professional environment where all knowledge, skills and abilities learned into the Master's degree will be implemented.

Final Master Thesis
The Master's degree programme completes the training process with this Master's Degree Final Project. The aim is for students to find their own professional path while learning to develop new solutions or products based on AM, and define the manufacturing process and its business model.

Students will have two possibilites, use a challenge from its company or develop its own idea. For those students that do not have or do not find a proper challenge, strategic and collaborative master partners will provide appropiate challenges to be solved.
The UPC School reserves the right to modify the contents of the programme, which may vary in order to better accommodate the course objectives.
Degree
Continuing education master's degree in Additive Manufacturing, issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued by virtue of the provisions of art. 7.1 of Organic Law 2/2023 of 22 March, concerning the University System, and art. 36 of Royal Decree 822/2021 of 28 September, which establishes the organisation of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality. A prior official university qualification is necessary to obtain it. Otherwise, the student will receive a certificate of completion of the programme issued by the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya. Lifelong learning studies at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya are approved by the University's Governing Council on an annual basis. (See details appearing on the certificate).

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.



Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Solving exercises
Solutions are worked on by practising routines, applying formulas and algorithms, and procedures are followed for transforming the available information and interpreting the results.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
Visits
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Problem-based learning (PBL)
An active learning methodology that enables the student to be involved from the beginning, and to acquire knowledge and skills by considering and resolving complex problems and situations.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Workshops
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Advanced asynchronous communication
Systems that enable smooth and clear communication in any situation (video chats, forums, recorded lectures, etc.).
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.
Work placements & employment service
Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
Virtual campus
The students on this continuing education master's degree will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.
