Why this programme?
Quantum engineering concerns the development of technology that is based on quantum physics, i.e., on the physical laws that describe the world at microscopic scale. The mathematical framework provided by quantum information theory together with the experimental advances in preparing and manipulating systems of very small sizes, have opened the route to the so-called second quantum revolution, heralding radical changes in technology.

Such technologies have the potential to offer new and better methods to solve challenging problems. Thanks to their large data processing capacity which is inherently parallel, some problems in communications, computation, cybersecurity, sensing and simulations can be solved faster and more efficiently. Additionally, it is expected that quantum technologies will impact certain areas in chemistry, material sciences, biology, medicine, artificial intelligence and machine learning to name a few.

In Europe, there is an increasing demand of engineers specifically trained to use the laws of quantum physics for technological applications. The Quantum Engineering Postgraduate Degree aims at providing an initial comprehensive training on quantum technologies to engineers, mathematicians, physicists, computer sciences or professionals from the information and communication technologies (TIC) interested in the rapidly evolving field of technology. This new profiles will be able to implement and develop projects based on quantum technologies.

  • To provide a scientific basis on quantum technologies merging knowledge from physics, information theory, computing science and telecommunications.
  • To know, understand and get acquainted with quantum technologies developed by some pioneering companies on the field.
  • To acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about new business models around quantum technologies.
Who is it for?
Graduates in mathematics, physics, computing, telecommunications, industrial engineering, civil engineering and other engineering studies.

Professionals from the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector interested in knowing the theoretical bases, applications and new business models quantum technologies might offer.

Theoretical Background on Quantum Physics
This block includes the basic concepts of quantum physics needed to handle quantum technologies. An extensive revision of the foundational pillars of quantum physics together with its appropriate mathematical formalism will be presented. Crucial concepts like entanglement, superposition, coherence, non-locality, pivotal for quantum technologies will be discussed and exemplified in physical and computer science situations.

Basic Elements of Quantum Technologies
This block of the postgraduate covers, in a self-consistent way, the four main pillars of present quantum technologies namely: quantum communication aiming at increasing security and efficiency of data transfer; quantum computing aiming at solving hard or intractable computational problems with classical computers; quantum simulations providing concrete solutions for concrete hard computational problems and quantum sensing and metrology aiming at dramatic increase on the accuracy in parameter estimation. This part of the course covers both basic ideas, experimental realizations and a thorough overview of the state-of-the-art and the potential quantum advantage of future technologies.

Market Development of Quantum Technologies
This third block includes, on the one hand, a review of the different platforms used for quantum technologies including optical systems, solid state systems, atoms, ions, superconducting circuits. For the analysis of quantum technologies market development, different cases of successful companies operating both at national and/or international level will be presented.

Project
This final block deals with the realization of the postgraduate final project (PFP) under the guidance of one of the professors of the postgraduate course. The PFP, compulsory, will deal with theoretical or practical developments of quantum technologies. The PFP will be publicly defended and evaluate in order to obtain the corresponding degree.
The UPC School reserves the right to modify the contents of the programme, which may vary in order to better accommodate the course objectives.
Degree
Postgraduate diplomas issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued pursuant to art. 34.1 of Organic Law 4/2007 of 12 April, amending Organic Law 6/2001 of 21 December, concerning Universities. To obtain this degree it is necessary to have an official. Otherwise, the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya will only award them a a certificate of completion.

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Solving exercises, questionnaires or exams
Individual tests aimed at assessing the degree of learning and the acquisition of competences.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.

Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
Virtual campus
The students on this postgraduate course will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

He was Fleming and Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Durham (UK) and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Granada. He is one the founders of the Quantum Information Group (GIQ) at UAB. He is author of around 70 publications in international journals and has been invited reseracher in many international centres.

    MSc and PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Calgary, Canada. I was a post-doctoral fellow for 3.5 years at the Institute for theoretical Physics, University of Innsbruck. I arrived at the Quantum Information Group of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2016 as a Juan de la Cierva research fellow. Since then, I have been involved in several R&D projects (Spanish and European) focusing on applications of quantum theory to statistical inference, quantum communication and computation, quantum resource theories, as well as quantum foundations.

How to start admission
To start the enrolment process for this programme you must complete and send the form that you will find at the bottom of these lines.

Next you will receive a welcome email detailing the three steps necessary to formalize the enrolment procedure:

1. Complete and confirm your personal details.

2. Validate your curriculum vitae and attach any additional required documentation, whenever this is necessary for admission.

3. Pay €110 in concept of the registration fee for the programme. This fee will be discounted from the total enrolment fee and will only be returned when a student isn't admitted on a programme.

Once the fee has been paid and we have all your documentation, we will assess your candidacy and, if you are admitted on the course, we will send you a letter of acceptance. This document will provide you with all the necessary information to formalize the enrolment process for the programme.
