Why this postgraduate course?
Barcelona is a city with an illustrious tradition in interior design. As a discipline it has seen great success but until now there have not been any notable interior design educational offerings. This postgraduate course in Interior Design seeks to fill this void by offering a new program that awakens curiosity and sharpens the perception and sensitivity of participants. Interior design work starts where architecture leaves off and mainly deals with the empty spaces that have been created. It is the designer who has to keep the people who use the space in mind.

Up until now we have never seen so many different family models and different casuistries in terms of what are referred to as relational structures. People can live alone, with partners for a time period, or even with children and later without them, once they have become adults. This is why this postgraduate course totally breaks with the concept that has existed up until now; the concept that interior decorators or designers can do everything according to their own personal style and way of doing things. The personal needs of every individual and their situation have humbled professionals in this field.

This postgraduate course is may be taken independently or as part of the Master's programme in Space Design and Creation. In this course students will work with perception and awareness, two important aspects to take into account when learning how to listen and respect the opinions of others. When designing interiors nothing is ever completely finalised, anything can be created and final and definitive changes will come when the client finally moves into the space.

All of the class sessions will be taught at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona.

Workshop of the Interior Space
  • Sequence of different thematic exercises designed to respond to spatial, specific or conceptual problems.
  • Criticism, reflection and analysis are promoted with the will to formulate ambitious proposals that overcome the conventional forms that we are accustomed to.
  • Volumetric and sensory understanding of space, space language and materialization of this language are worked on.

Theory of the Interior Space
  • Monographic classes and monographs of a theoretical nature linked to the workshop of the interior space.
  • It is deepened in aspects related to the definition and construction of interior spaces, such as the concept of urban interior, new ways of living, the culture of minimum space, the imaginary of the house in the mass media and flexibility as a condition of interior design, among others.

  • Space, sensory and perceptive experiences involving color, light, shadows, sounds, aromas, new models of interpretation and emotion.

Research Work and Synthesis of Interior Design
  • Final research and synthesis work that must reflect the knowledge acquired throughout the course.

Comprehensive Workshop: Design and Production of Spaces (BCN Light)
  • Research of the perceptive, sensitive and emotional fields that customize the spaces, with the objective of verifying and extending the capacities of constructing a formal language of its own.
  • Experimentation with the factors that individually or collectively act and interact in the construction of a certain spatial sensation.
  • Acquisition of language that allows dialogue with specialists in each subject and project responsibly.
The UPC School reserves the right to modify the contents of the programme, which may vary in order to better accommodate the course objectives.
Postgraduate qualification in Interior Design, issued by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Issued by virtue of the provisions of art. 7.1 of Organic Law 2/2023 of 22 March, concerning the University System, and art. 36 of Royal Decree 822/2021 of 28 September, which establishes the organisation of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality. A prior official university qualification is necessary to obtain it. Otherwise, the student will receive a certificate of completion of the programme issued by the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya. Lifelong learning studies at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya are approved by the University's Governing Council on an annual basis. (See details appearing on the certificate).

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Assessment criteria
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Work placements & employment service
Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
Virtual campus
The students on this postgraduate course will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.

Member of Arquitectura Filmada, a collective that produces architecture videos for studios such as HArquitectes, Fundación Enric Miralles, Peris & Toral or Batlleiroig.

Currently pursuing a PhD in History and Theory of Architecture, specializing in Gaudí, Barcelona and its architecture. How to start admission
