The use of experimental tools to obtain information about the dynamic response of civil structures is a well-established practice. In particular, the identification of modal parameters can be traced back to the mid-twentieth century. Experimental modal analysis (EMA) has identified characteristic parameters based on measurements of applied force and the vibration response.
In a controlled testing environment, an experimental analysis provides very important results for structural characterisation. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in operational modal analysis (OMA), which despite having conditions which are no longer controlled and become random, has enormous logistical advantages for possible structural identification over time. This session will cover the concepts of both EMA and OMA, highlighting aspects of measurement and calculation.
The speaker
Rolando Chacón is a lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the UPC School of Civil Engineering. He currently teaches on both bachelor's and master's degree courses. His teaching and his research focus on the static and dynamic behaviour of metal structures with numerical and experimental aspects.
