An Open Class is to be held at 05:30 PM on thursday 22-07-2021 on Masters in Architectural Structures Engineering (Blended learning) and Masters in Architectural Structures Engineering (Online).

Esta sesión destacará los principales retos a los que se enfrenta la industria de la construcción a la hora de dar cumplimiento a las directrices de sostenibilidad impuestas por la comunidad internacional, y cómo desde el estudio SOM están intentando convertir estos retos en nuevas oportunidades de diseño. Esto incluye explorar el uso de materiales alternativos para sustituir, total o parcialmente, las soluciones que sólo implican acero y hormigón.

La conferencia ilustrará la implementación con éxito de una de estas soluciones en un proyecto real, en la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas en Ginebra, donde se utiliza la construcción de madera y hormigón compuesto. En definitiva, la charla explorará la toma de decisiones de diseño influidas, ya desde un inicio, por opciones basadas en sostenibilidad, incluidas las alturas de construcción, las redes y los materiales. La conferencia concluirá con los esfuerzos de investigación actuales destinados a optimizar el uso de materiales en sistemas de suelo.

El ponente

Karl Micallef. Ingeniero estructural en la oficina de Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) en Londres, donde tiene ha trabajado durante los últimos 6 años en proyectos de diversas escalas y con un interés particular en producir, junto con otros diseñadores, soluciones de diseño sostenible. En los últimos años ha trabajado en proyectos tan singulares como las Oficinas de las Naciones Unidas en Ginebra, que comprende un bloque de oficinas de 25.000 m² con estructura compuesta de RC y madera totalmente expuesta, en la torre residencial de 245 m de altura en Karlatornet (Göteborg, Suecia), con núcleo RC y sistema de separador, y en la gran urbanización de 210.000 m² en Nine Elms Square (Londres), que comprende 12 edificios, incluidas 3 torres de 35, 45 y 55 pisos.

Licenciado en Ingeniería y Arquitectura por la Universidad de Malta, máster en ingeniería de terremotos por el Imperial College de Londres y Doctor en Ingeniería Estructural por el Imperial College de Londres.
