Why this postgraduate course?
The current market climate in the automotive sector demonstrates a need for implementing new technologies that reduce dependence on petroleum and, most importantly, minimise pollution. There is a growing consciousness on the part of the consumer who wants to try to make their environmental impact as small as possible. This is why for a long time now the automobile industry and local governments have already been working on alternatives like hybrid vehicles and completely electric cars as a way to face the challenges of research, development and innovation involved with these types of vehicles.

The Ministry of Industry predicts that by the year 2020 around 250,000 vehicles incorporating this technology will be manufactured in Spain, all of which implies changes in the vehicles as well as certain infrastructures to be able to host this production. The different issues around recharge points, improvements in energy storage technology as well as legal issues like who pays for charging in housing communities have to be solved. All of these issues are on the table and the demand is imminent. In this sector there are already many instances of collaboration with engineers from other countries where they have more experience with this type of specialised vehicle.

Currently, and in parallel with the recovery of the automotive industry, are being launched to the market the first hybrid and electric generation models covering all segments. In the automotive sector and has begun a collaboration with hitherto little companies related to the sector, collaboration requires adaptation by professionals and the arrival of new training profiles. To complement this, the appearance of these vehicles requires the adaptation of existing infrastructure as well as the current mobility policies.

Aims
  • Analyse the electric and hybrid (combined electric and traditional internal combustion engines) propulsion systems and technologies.
  • Study the types and configurations of hybrids according to vehicle type.
  • Improve energy storage systems and their internal power management.
  • Learn the technical principles of the electric motors currently in use along with their charging systems and their energy storage systems.
  • Development of the way the energy distribution network is managed and designed to ensure proper recharging of these vehicles in urban areas.
Who is it for?
  • Professionals working in the automotive industry either directly for the automaker or auxiliary companies.
  • Industrial Engineers.
  • Employees at testing laboratories.
  • Professionals from public organisations linked to the technology sector.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Visits
These visits are to specialist centres, companies in the sector or outstanding and important locations in the sector, in order to obtain knowledge in situ of development, production and demonstration environments within the programme.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Solving exercises, questionnaires or exams
Individual tests aimed at assessing the degree of learning and the acquisition of competences.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.
